About The Artist
Diane E. Wilkinson was born in Denver, Colorado to an American father and a Canadian mother. A favorite early memory, her mother's ability to draw a horse upon request, fueled a life-long interest in rendering. A High School art class introduced her to batik, clay sculpture, watercolor, acrylic media, and oils. The magical feel of the oil media captured her interest and over the next ten years, she painted landscapes while attending school or working. She married an Australian-born Canadian, began a family, formed a desktop publishing company (substituting computer graphics for oil painting while her two children grew), and moved another seven times, including the four international locations: Canada, Libya, Norway, and England. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BFA in Painting from the University of Houston. Her interests include travel or transition (due to 22 relocations), the health of the environment, its effect on personal and generational well-being, and the ways we see or perceive our surroundings. These themes appear in her work that is both representational and abstracted.
Artist's Statement
Relocations develop one's ability to observe a new environment, then discriminately grasp the essentials needed for rapid assimilation. For me, as a global nomad, survival demands that beauty be uncovered, even where none is apparent.
